What is an Emergency Dentist? An emergency dentist is a dentist that offers emergency services. They attend to patients who don’t have an appointment with said dentist but require immediate dental assistance. However, they do have certain conditions that patients must follow for their emergencies to be attended to. A chipped tooth or a re-cementing of the crown cannot be constituted as emergencies as they are more aesthetic and can be attended to during a dentist’s regular working hours. So, what constitutes a dental emergency? A dental emergency can be something that will prevent someone from going on about their lives due to their dental problem. One such example is a toothache. Toothaches can be considered as emergencies because they are a sign of possible infection around or within a tooth. The pain can range from slight discomfort to extreme. While pain relievers are often effective, they don’t provide long-term relief or solution to the problem. Lingering toothaches are a sign that there’s something wrong and needs immediate dental attention. Chipped teeth are not really considered an emergency because they are mostly aesthetic. This aesthetic problem can wait for a couple of days before it can be attended by a dentist, but there are certain cases wherein a chipped tooth needs dental attention. Cracked or fractured teeth that continue to chip away even if there’s no more added pressure to the teeth (like chewing of food) can be considered as an emergency because it’s an indication that there’s internal damage within the tooth or teeth as well. A knocked-out tooth is different from a chipped tooth because they are completely broken off from the roots. This usually happens when a patient experiences a severe blow to the mouth that the tooth or teeth break off. This is a common problem faced by athletes, which is they are required to wear mouthpieces for protection. When you do get your teeth knocked out, it’s time to seek dental assistance immediately.
